Huge Hole found in the Universe The universe has a huge hole in it that dwarfs anything else of its kind. The discovery caught astronomers by surprise. August 2007

Findings Challenge Established Views on Human Geneome The ENCODE consortium's major findings include the discovery that the majority of DNA in the human genome is transcribed into functional molecules, called RNA, and that these transcripts extensively overlap one another. June 2007

Doctors claim suspended animation success Researchers are testing potentially life-saving techniques for keeping humans in a state of suspended animation while surgeons repair their wounds. Jan 2006

NASA's Stardust sample return mission returned safely to Earth. Jan 2006

ASU researchers 'wire' DNA to identify mutations. A team of ASU researchers led by Nongjian Tao and Peiming Zhang has developed a new, breakthrough technique for the detection of DNA mutations. Dec 2005

Titan Found to Be Rather Like Early Earth. Dec 2005

One step closer to eternal youth A genetic experiment to unlock the secrets of the ageing process has created organisms that live six times their usual lifespan. Nov 2006

Budding Black Holes Tiny black holes could soon be made on demand in particle accelerators, but shortly after their birth, they might blink out of existence. Oct 2005

Scientists Are Unmoved by Claim of New Species. New discoveries in a cave on the Indonesian island of Flores, notably another jaw bone, appear to give additional support to the idea that a separate species of little people new to science and now extinct lived there as recently as 12,000 years ago. But a vigorous minority of skeptical scientists are unmoved by the new findings. They contend that the skeletal remains are more likely to be deformed modern humans, not a distinct species. Oct 2005

Reported 10th planet Xena has moon named Gabrielle. Xena, the possible 10th planet in our solar system, has its own moon, a dim little satellite called Gabrielle, its discoverers reported. Astronomers who reported Xena's discovery in July said they detected Xena's sidekick on September 10 using the Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Their findings will be submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters on Monday. Oct 2005

Wild gorillas seen to use tools. Gorillas have been seen for the first time using simple tools to perform tasks in the wild, researchers say. Scientists observed gorillas in a remote Congolese forest using sticks to test the depth of muddy water and to cross swampy areas. Sept. 2005
'Big baby' galaxy detected in early universe. Astronomers using two of NASA's most powerful telescopes said on Tuesday they have detected a "big baby" galaxy, vastly heavy for its young age and its location in the early universe. Sept. 2005

Researchers find human brain still evolving. Human evolution, University of Chicago researchers report, is still under way in what has become our most important organ: the brain. In two related papers, published in the September 9, 2005, issue of Science, they show that two genes linked to brain size are rapidly evolving in humans. Sept. 2005
